Talking to the kids...

Of the vast number of songs that I’ve heard in my lifetime, I struggle to find many that give me the same amount of joy as Disco 2000 by Pulp. It’s quite a tricky one to explain. It’s perennially thought of as a ‘lesser’ single than its famous, game-changing cousin Common People, but I enjoy it so much more. Common People was wonderful for the message, and even without that, it was a great tune in its own right. Disco 2000 just does it a little more for me.

I think it’s how it’s kind of uplifting and also kind of tragic at the same time. It’s that weird mix where I feel happy but with an undercurrent of tragedy. Sort of bittersweet. The memories of an optimistic youth against the regret of missed opportunities. The looking to the future alongside the failings of one to realise their hopes and dreams. The effect is compounded now thanks to the fact that it’s looking forward to the year 2000, and it’s currently 2012. We’ve bypassed it, and we’re looking back again.

Besides all that though I also love the video. The video is great all the way through; It’s kinda tacky in a good way, but I think my personal highlight is at 3:04. Look at how he triumphantly slides onto the dancefloor to make his move on her. That girl might aswell drop to her knees right now and get to work. This man is on fire.
