Talking to the kids...

Pretty Like Drugs. It’s one of my favourite QueenAdreena songs. Probably not my favourite, if we’re being totally honest. I would think that honour would go to either ‘Suck’ or ‘Killer (tits)’. In fact, I loved ‘Killer (tits)’ as soon as I saw what it was called. It was like ‘Supermuffdiver’ by King Adora or ‘Fingers (Inside Me)’ by Cherry Bikini, you know. One of those songs you hope to God is good because it has such a wonderful name.

Anyway, I’ve always liked this song, and the album. QueenAdreena have a delightful knack of never, ever getting ideas above their station. They don’t start shoe horning huge orchestras into sweeping ballads, or hiring Brian Eno to produce. You don’t really see them on Top of the Pops or releasing appalling, sub-Killers synth rock that sounds like Bruce Springsteen being covered by DJ Sammy. They just kinda turn up, crank up the distortion, and kick off. This isn’t a critique on a perceived lack of adventure within the band. It’s a compliment.

Too many bands like to use the “evolution” card as a thinly veiled excuse for watering down their sound to appeal to cretins in Kooks t-shirts. I like bands that stick to their guns. QueenAdreena have done that, and that’s why I like every album they’ve done. They have a winning formula of the dirty, grimy guitar work clashing against the sometimes ethereal sometimes banshee vocals of Katie-Jane Garside. I’m happy with this arrangement.

I’m happy with most of Katie-Jane’s work to be honest. I thought she was fantastic in Daisy Chainsaw, and I’m a fan of Ruby Throat too. I just think she’s a great frontwoman for a band. There’s not really anybody else like her. She’s like one part Tinkerbell, one part Marla singer; a sort of fucked up fairy that is all vulnerable and child-like before going berserk and clawing your eyes out.

Beautiful.
